Inside the World of River Cruising: Insights from My Amsterdam Conference

If I had to sum up my experience into one word, it would be spectacular! I arrived in Amsterdam a few days early to adjust to the time change and explore as much of the city as possible and I instantly fell in love! I’ve always appreciated colonial architecture, but nothing prepared me for how much I’d connect with Amsterdam’s charm. The people, the buildings, the canals, the endless bikes… the city feels alive in a way that’s both familiar and comforting. It’s so full of life. I tasted my way through some amazing food at Chun and Tasty Asia, both absolutely worth a visit. I also took a walking tour and a river tour, and I highly recommend doing both. Each offers a completely different perspective of the city. Just be prepared to walk… a lot.

Experiencing the River Cruise Expo

The River Cruise Expo is an annual conference hosted by the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), and this year featured 15 river cruise ships. What makes this event so unique is the opportunity for attendees to stay onboard a ship throughout the conference. It’s an immersive way to experience each brand firsthand.

I chose to stay on the brand‑new AmaWaterways AmaSofia, and she is truly stunning. Ama was the first river cruise brand I ever trained with, so staying onboard felt like a full‑circle moment. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely committed to making our stay exceptional. Breakfast onboard was so good, and afternoon tea quickly became a favorite- especially the snack station. The protein balls were unforgettable!

On the final night, I had the privilege of dining at the Captain’s Table, a reservation‑only experience with a set menu. It was one of those meals I’ll remember forever. It was beautifully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious.

Touring the Ships: What Makes Each Brand Unique

Throughout the conference, I toured ships from every attending brand and seeing them back‑to‑back was eye‑opening. Every line is impressive in its own way, but they each offer something different and naturally attract different types of travelers. Here’s how I categorize them based on experience, inclusions, and ideal guest fit. All-Inclusive Luxury: high end service, refined atmosphere, fine dining, and premium excursions. For this traveler price is not the driving factor. Uniworld – also fits in the Boutique category Tauck - also fits in the active category Scenic Upper Premium: these lines offer modern ships, good food, wine/beer included with meals, and well thought out excursions. This traveler is active and adventure seekers. More outdoor based experiences. Ama Waterways - also fits in the active and younger traveler categories Amadeus River Cruises – also fits in the Boutique category Celebrity Cruises-River – first ship due in 2027, I think they will fit into the younger traveler category as well Riverside Cruises (while they say they are luxury, I think they are more upper premium)- also fits in the younger traveler category Riviera River Cruises Viking River Cruises Premium: like upper premium, but price point is lower. Not all excursions are included. These lines keep pricing accessible while still offering a great river cruise experience. This traveler is a little more budget conscious. Avalon Waterways - also fits in the active and younger traveler categories Viva Cruises

A Growing Industry with Endless Possibilities

You may not recognize every name on this list, but many of these companies have been in the river cruise world for decades. The industry is growing rapidly, and every brand is refining its product and expanding its fleet. Most offer themed or special‑interest sailings such as holiday markets, wine and beer cruises, history‑focused itineraries, and group experiences. There truly is something for everyone.

Finding the Right Fit

We all travel differently and that’s the beauty of river cruising. Just because you’ve seen commercials for one major brand doesn’t mean it’s the only option. Far from it. Every line I toured offers an incredible experience; the key is finding the one that aligns with your travel style and the kind of experience you want to have.

And that’s where I come in. If you’re curious about which river cruise line fits your personality, travel style, and dream itinerary, I’d love to help you discover the perfect match. Fill out my River Cruise Inquiry form here and I'll be in touch.
